Stella's Story

[Back to Index]

My name is Stella. I am told that I am a cross between a Labrador and a Pitbull. I am roughly 12-14 weeks old now (Aug. 1, 2006) and am settling into my new home in Alabama. My new mommy went to a lot of trouble and lotsa money to get me from Club O to Alabama and I am so very grateful that I give her lots of kisses each day to prove it!

My life began as a small abandoned puppy that Joelle took in. She brought me to Club O and took me out on a leash and to the beach every day. My new mommy, Terri, kept seeing me and talking about me to my new Dad. My mommy has quite a reputation with the animals. It seems the last five years at Club O, that she would take in a dog or cat during her stay and play with and feed it. All her friends at Club O each year would call her the "Dog Lady", as she always had some dog following her down the beach. My new mommy and daddy talked each year of possibly bringing a dog home so they could have a piece of St. Martin with them each and every day.

My new parents love animals. Last year they bought some land and built a new house with a shed and barn. They already had a Jack Russell Terrier (Sarah) 3 cats (Lizzie, Callie and Oreo), 2 grown Angora goats (Saturn and Rosebud), a 6 week old baby goat (Remington) that still bottle feeds every few hours, 4 fish in a pond, a pet turtle, and 4 deer that they feed each winter in the backyard. My mommy would still stop for stray animals, bathe and feed them, then find a new home for them. She really is a "sucker" for a stray. Wow! Am I lucky!

Back at Club O, my mommy ran into Joelle one day when she was walking me. I ran up to Terri, hugged and kissed her, and I could tell, she loved me already. Joelle told her that I was up for adoption so she and John said they would take me. Upon calling the airlines, Terri found out that they wouldn't let her take me home on the plane. She was very sad but did not give up. She had her friends call their airlines and tried to work out other arrangements. Terri and John would babysit me at night so Joelle could go out and I would hear them talking about getting me home. They already loved me so much, I prayed they would find a way.

It was a very exhausting and exciting 48 hours for my new journey. I flew from St. Martin, to Miami, to Chicago with Joelle on Monday. She then took me back to the airport on Wednesday morning so I could be with my new mom. She had traveled from Montgomery, AL to Memphis, TN, to Chicago. Then everything happened so fast my head was spinning. My new mom only had 25 minutes to get off her plane, pick me up at security from Joelle, get my boarding pass, and board the plane to head back to Alabama! Joelle put me in my new carrier, my new mom fussed at some man at security (he was being really rude), then she took off her shoes and ran through the airport. I was being juggled and tumbled around and learned when my new mom said "excuse me", people got out of her way...fast! We finally made it on the airplane with 3 minutes to spare. My new mommy took me out, loved on me with tears in her eyes and told me I was homeward bound.

When I arrived at my new home, the cats hissed at me and Sarah growled. Terri's two daughters were picking me up, hugging and kissing me and that made things so much better. There were so many strange things that I was not used to. I wondered how they could love me when they already had so many animals. Two weeks later, I am the queen bee of the house. My parents have so much love in their hearts for animals, there is plenty to go around.

A few days at my new home and I discovered fire ants! I saw a pile of dirt and dug into it. It is not like beach sand, it has bugs in it that bite-real hard! My mommy had to take me to the vet because my bites got ugly looking. I am on antibiotics now. I am stubborn--I intend to get the ants, even though I have been bit over and over again. This heat is pretty rough! I really like to be in the air conditioned house-especially on the couch! Sarah and I play well together now. She lets me know when she has had enough of my puppy play. Remington, the baby goat, is my friend. We head butt each other and run around the yard together. When he drinks his bottle, he is messy and drips milk. He doesn't mind that I stand under him and lick the mess. My parents have a swimming pool that Sarah loves to swim in. I am sort of nervous, maybe when I am older I will get in. I am taking puppy training classes. I am the only non-purebred dog in my class. My mommy tells me I am so smart. I already sit and lay down on command. I still don't always let her know when I need to go potty but I am working on that. I love to lay on my new sisters, Amanda and Emily's, blankets. They even let me get on their bed to watch TV! I have my own toy basket with my own toys. I love to pull them all out at one time before I decide which one to play with.

I still have more puppy shots to get and my mommy says I will have to have surgery to keep me from having puppies. I love my new home and feel so lucky that Terri and John wanted me for their very own.

I will get my new parents to send updates as I grow and learn new things. Thank you Joelle for being my first mommy and trying so hard to find me a new home.

Stella was adopted in July, 2006.

I'm sometimes asked, 'Why do you spend so much of your time and money talking about kindness to animals when there is so much cruelty to men?' I answer, 'I am working at the roots.'
