What is S.N.O.B.?

S.N.O.B. stands for Spay/Neuter Orient Beach. We are an informal group of animal lovers, including people who are homeowners, guests and employees at Club Orient, a resort located on Orient Beach, St. Martin, French West Indies.

S.N.O.B. was founded in 2001. Using the humane principle of Trap, Neuter and Return, it has been very instrumental in helping to bring the local stray and feral cat population under a degree of control. We also encourage, and when possible, facilitate the adoption and relocation of Island Dogs.

How it all began

In February 2001 we returned to our vacation home after a long absence. During all the previous years there had been a solitary resident cat named Marmalade. This time upon our arrival we were immediately greeted by 5 young, extremely friendly cats.

The very next day we borrowed a carrier and, one by one, took them to a local veterinarian to be spayed or neutered, marked with a notched ear tip and returned to their point of origin.

These 5 were just the beginning. We were seeing more cats in different areas of the resort, both friendly and feral. Something needed to be done before the situation was out of control.

We began Trapping, Neutering and Returning the cats with management's permission. A few of our neighbors donated money to the cause. We returned several times that year and continued the process.

In February 2002 we organized a group of people who had expressed concern for the cats. Management, homeowners and guests gave us moral and/or financial support. The spaying and neutering of the rest of the cat colony moved forward. A year later the manager was telling us that he had noticed the difference. There was an occasional litter but the population explosion was leveling out.

Today we count on reports of un-notched cats to identify, locate and "TNR" them.

See more under Cats.

We also have a small, fluctuating dog population. See more under Dogs.
