Penelope's Story

[Back to Index]

Penny in the driver's seat I first saw Penny when Lolita and I went for a morning walk on the beach. She was just a plain, everyday, ordinary looking Island dog. She watched us approach, followed us with her eyes and sadly watched as we passed her by and continued our walk down the beach. When Lolita and I returned home I started making breakfast. Suddenly Lolita began barking fiercely and ran off. I ran to see what had happened and saw the chestnut brown dog disappearing in the distance. I scolded Lolita for chasing the lonely sad dog.
Minutes later I was cooking breakfast again and heard Lolita whimper from the front porch. When I went to see what was wrong there she was...sitting at a safe distance, sadly looking in our direction. She was back and she was waiting for an invitation. Lolita had whimpered to let me know she was back. Lolita politely allowed her to approach when I called her over. So we named her Penelope because we couldn't just keep referring to her as 'the brown dog'.
Penny and Lolita became inseparable. Penny seemed to enjoy our company but was cautious and continued to sleep with one eye open, ready to flee if she felt threatened. Days later when Tom suggested that we take both dogs home she must have heard him and understood because both dogs went to him where he was seated and each laid a paw on his knee. From that moment on Penelope was Tom's dog and had eyes only for him. Penny- Daddy's girl
Penny has turned out to be a most beautiful dog...personality wise and physically speaking. She is admired by our friends and strangers always tell Tom she is such a 'good looking dog'. She loves riding with Tom in his truck. Several people have told us they would like to have a dog just like Penny. She graduated #1 in her obedience class...the only mutt in her class of purebreds. (Lolita came in 4th.) We know nothing of her past other than her first owner missed out on a near perfect companion...gentle, kind and loving.
