Island Dogs
Usually of mixed breed, they vary in size, color and coat. Island Dogs, Coconut Retrievers and Creoles
are some of the names used to describe them.
Our experience has been that the majority of dogs are gentle, often frightened and have obviously belonged to someone at some time in their early life. Some appear wearing collars, but this does not necessarily mean they have just lost their way. If the collar is too tight or very dirty and worn, the dog has probably been abandoned or has left a home which did not provide for its basic needs. Occasionally a dog will have an ID tag. Historically, when called the owner will respond that there is no cause for concern, the dog will return on its own. The dog doesn't and rarely does anyone come to collect it.
Many of these dogs have been adopted by homeowners and guests. They now live happily in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands and other countries.
