Café's Story

[Back to Index]

We spotted Café on Orient Beach. She was a homeless, malnourished dog looking a bit like a red fox, with "millions" of ticks and fleas and extremely mistrustful of people. It took about four days to gain her confidence enough to clean her up and get her to the vet to discover all her health issues. We started her on medications for mange, intestinal parasites, and of course tick fever.

Within days of medication, love, and good food she became totally attached to us and wouldn't allow anyone to come near. Eventually, Café attempted to attack the policemen on the beach so we were warned never to bring her to the beach on pain of arrest.
Café & her new family No one was interested in a difficult dog so we ended up taking her to the animal shelter nearby. By the next day, she had climbed the fence and located us. We then kept her with us until, with heavy hearts, we departed St. Martin with Café once again at the shelter in a more secure area. For three years she stayed at the shelter, eventually used there as the night watch dog.
Each year we visited Club Orient and I would take her from the shelter, clean her up, and try to nurse her back to health. Two weeks was never enough and it was always heart-wrenching to leave her again. Several friends would also care for her and walk her while at Club orient. Finally the shelter was about to close and I knew I must take her back to the States. Strong-minded, she fought dangerously with my other dogs.
I was one extremely happy person when my poor special friend Café found a home with a nice family in Massachusetts. With great patience and some schooling, Café has become a real princess. She rides everywhere in the car, and even spends days at a time roaming the dorm at Clark University where one of her family studies. Café playing with island cousin Lady
