Bijou's Story

[Back to Index]

In October of 2002, ten year-old Lolita died unexpectedly at home while we were vacationing at Club Orient. I was heartbroken. About a week later, 3 days before we had to leave, a little black dog appeared at my front porch. She looked like a caricature of Lolita. She had these great big Lolita ears, short little legs and was half her size. I thought Lolita had sent her to me, but she was too frightened to let me touch her. I decided if she was still there when we returned in 5 weeks that I would have to take her home with me. I had no time to gain her confidence so I asked friends to help keep an eye on her.

She was passed on to 3 different sets of people from early-November to mid-December. When we returned, my friend brought her to me. I named her Bijou (my little French 'gem'). Just like Lolita, she went out a week later and befriended another frightened, sad-eyed, skinny hound dog. That's how Pepper came...and stayed...uninvited. They became great friends and were never far away from one another. They even slept butt to butt. We were beginning to pick up a pattern here...and Bijou and Pepper went home with us that April.

When Bijou met Penelope back home she made her best attempt to impress upon her that she was the alpha dog. Penny didn't buy it. She quickly flipped her over onto her back and let her know who the queen of the house was...and still is. Bijou quickly counted all 20 toes and agreed with Penny by giving her a lick on the nose.

Apparently being #2 dog isn't all that bad.
