What Is S.N.O.B.?

When possible, the strays at Club Orient are spayed/neutered and are given a purple collar to identify them. This lets people know not only that they will not be procreating but that females in heat will not be attracting unaltered males to our beach. These dogs are adoptable and we would appreciate it if SNOB be notified when this happens. We've been doing this one dog at a time, just as they show up on our beach, and many have been adopted, mostly to Americans and Canadians.

S.N.O.B. was founded in 2001. Using the humane principle of Trap, Neuter and Return, it has been very instrumental in helping to bring the local stray and feral cat population under a degree of control. We also encourage, and when possible, facilitate the adoption and relocation of Island Dogs.   [more...]

Why Are There Stray Animals In St. Martin?

St. Martin at present does not have:

  1. An Animal Shelter
  2. A full-time government Animal Control Agency
  3. Sufficient public education regarding the importance of spaying and neutering pets

The local shelter closed some time ago. Recent attempts to revive it have been unsuccessful.
The Fourrière, which is the French version of a dog pound, has also closed. It reopens from time to time for about one week. The dog catchers arrive from Guadaloupe and proceed to sweep the French side of the island and quickly put down any dog who is unclaimed. Seldom, if ever, is a dog saved from the pound by his owner and they do not allow adoptions.

How To Handle an Unwelcome Cat or Dog

We understand that not everyone wants to have animals around during a vacation. If their presence is undesirable, the best method is to totally ignore them-- do not make eye contact, talk to or even shoo them away. Island Cats and Dogs have learned to simply move on when they are not welcomed.
